Federal Government Announces Over 700 Terrorism Convictions Nationwide, Strengthens Commitment to National Security

The Federal Government of Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in its fight against terrorism, announcing that over 700 individuals have been successfully convicted and jailed for terrorism-related offenses across the country. This landmark figure underscores the administration's unwavering resolve to dismantle terror networks, deliver justice to victims, and restore peace in affected communities.

The disclosure was made by the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing on Sunday. He highlighted the role of the Special Court for Boko Haram cases, which has conducted more than seven sessions, leading to the conviction of these high-profile suspects. "Prosecutions of terrorism suspects are underway in courts across Nigeria—at both state and federal levels in Abuja," Idris stated. "The Nigeria Police Force is currently handling hundreds of terrorism and violent crime cases across states, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies are actively engaged in related prosecutions."

This achievement builds on the Federal Government's intensified efforts since 2024, where over 124 additional terrorists and insurgents have been convicted. Ongoing trials include high-profile cases involving leaders of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan (ANSARU), suspects linked to the 2022 Owo Church massacre, and perpetrators of reprisal killings in Benue State. The Attorney General of the Federation is providing leadership to expedite these trials, ensuring swift justice while upholding due process and human rights standards.

The convictions encompass a range of offenses, from direct involvement in attacks and abductions to terrorism financing, with sentences including life imprisonment, death penalties, and terms ranging from 20 to 70 years. These outcomes reflect collaborative efforts among the judiciary, military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

"This is a testament to our collective determination to eradicate terrorism from our soil," said Minister Idris. "While we celebrate these victories, we remain vigilant. The Federal Government will continue to support security agencies in their operations, rehabilitate deradicalized individuals through programs like Operation Safe Corridor, and collaborate with international partners to address emerging threats."

The announcement comes amid recent arrests and arraignments, including nine suspects linked to attacks in Benue and Plateau states, demonstrating the proactive stance of Nigeria's security apparatus. Over 5,000 terrorism suspects have been nabbed nationwide in the past year, with 360 firearms and thousands of ammunition recovered, further bolstering the nation's counter-terrorism framework.

As Nigeria marks this progress, the government calls on citizens to remain supportive of security efforts and report suspicious activities. These convictions not only deter future threats but also pave the way for sustainable development and unity in regions long plagued by violence.
