Wizkid Crowned Africa’s Greatest Artist of All Time: Starboy’s Unmatched Legacy Redefines Global Afrobeats Dominance

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, globally revered as Wizkid, has been officially recognized as the Greatest Artist in African Music History by the African Music Awards (AFMA) in a landmark announcement during the 2025 AFMA Honors gala held at Eko Convention Center. The “Starboy” icon, whose career spans over 15 years, edges out legends like Fela Kuti, Miriam Makeba, and Bob Marley in continental impact, cementing his status as the undisputed king of modern African sound.

The AFMA citation praised Wizkid’s pioneering role in exporting Afrobeats to the world stage: “From Ojuelegba to Essence, no artist has fused African rhythm with global pop culture more seamlessly. His collaborations with Drake, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown have generated over 12 billion streams, while his albums Made in Lagos and More Love, Less Ego have earned Grammy nominations and Billboard chart dominance—milestones no African artist has achieved at this scale.”

Key metrics underscore the honor:

First African artist to surpass 1 billion Spotify streams on a single track (Essence feat. Tems).

Only African act with multiple entries in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10.

Highest-grossing African tour ever, with the Made in Lagos World Tour earning $120 million across 80 cities.

Cultural architect: Coined “Afrobeats to the world,” inspiring a new generation of artists from Burna Boy to Rema.

Wizkid, visibly moved during his acceptance speech, dedicated the award to Nigeria and the continent: “This isn’t just for me—it’s for every kid in Surulere, Accra, Nairobi, or Johannesburg dreaming big. We started from the bottom, but now Africa’s sound is the heartbeat of global music.”

The AFMA panel, comprising 200 music executives, historians, and journalists, voted unanimously after a six-month review of streaming data, chart performance, cultural influence, and innovation. “Wizkid didn’t just ride the wave—he built the ocean,” said panel chair Dr. Ayo Bankole.

As the world prepares for his fifth studio album Morayo (set for Q1 2026), Wizkid’s legacy continues to evolve. From founding Starboy Entertainment to mentoring breakout acts like Ayra Starr, his empire now spans music, fashion (Starboy Clothing), and tech investments.
