AFROBEAT PIONEER FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI MAKES HISTORY AS FIRST AFRICAN TO RECEIVE GRAMMY® LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Recording Academy® has posthumously honored **Fela Anikulapo Kuti**, the legendary Nigerian musician, composer, and activist widely regarded as the "King of Afrobeat," with the prestigious **Lifetime Achievement Award** — making him the first African artist in history to receive this distinction.

The award, announced as part of the 2026 Special Merit Awards, recognizes Fela's unparalleled contributions to music over decades. His groundbreaking fusion of West African rhythms, jazz, funk, and soul created **Afrobeat**, a genre that has profoundly influenced global music while serving as a powerful vehicle for social and political commentary.

Fela, who passed away in 1997 at the age of 58, will be celebrated alongside an esteemed class of honorees including Whitney Houston, Cher, Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, and Paul Simon. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to performers who have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.

This historic recognition comes nearly three decades after Fela's death and marks a profound moment of global acknowledgment for African musical innovation. It follows the 2025 induction of his iconic 1976 album *Zombie* into the Grammy Hall of Fame and arrives amid the growing international prominence of African sounds, including the establishment of the Best African Music Performance category at the Grammys.

**Seun Kuti**, Fela's son and a leading Afrobeat practitioner, shared: "This award is a testament to Baba's unwavering commitment to truth, resistance, and the power of music to challenge injustice. He fought the system his entire life — now the world is finally saluting the sound he created. Afrobeat lives on, louder than ever."

**Femi Kuti**, another son and Grammy-nominated artist, added: "For a man who was arrested, beaten, and persecuted for his lyrics, this Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award feels like poetic justice. It's not just for Fela — it's for every African artist who dares to speak truth through rhythm."

The award will be presented at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, the eve of the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti's legacy endures through his vast discography, the annual Felabration festival in Lagos, and the continued work of his sons Femi and Seun Kuti, who carry forward the Afrobeat tradition worldwide.
